Paradise trashed

Paradise trashed
The Pacific Ocean is choking on our waste.
by Christopher Pala / 11-26-2008
Paradise trashed

Ever since I went to Midway, I’ve never looked at a bottle cap or a disposable lighter in the same way. I used to think they were insignificant little things, which is close to not thinking at all. But walking around this gorgeous atoll 1,500 miles from Honolulu, I discovered that they are lethal weapons responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. When I see one on the beach now, I pick it up, put in my pocket and throw it in the trash.

Midway is home to the biggest albatross rookery in the world. More than 600,000 pairs of Laysan albatrosses descend each year on a pair of islands that make up a tad less than a square mile, packing some areas with a density of several thousand per acre. In fact, there are so many albatrosses present during the November-to-June mating season that the only plane that services the island, a vintage turbo-prop Gulfstream I, has to land at night to reduce the danger of hitting one.

Nine More Wastewater Overflows on Oahu Due to Heavy Rains
By Marcus Owens, 12/12/2008 8:49:56 AM

Crews from the city’s Department of Environmental Services responded to nine more wastewater overflows on Oahu today.

The National Weather Service reports many areas of Oahu received between 10 and 14 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, surcharging collection systems from Kailua to Waianae.

The list of overflows is as follows:

First Council Meeting A Lotta Rocky

http://kauaiworld.com/articles/2008/11/25/news/kauai_news/doc492ba602e01...

"First council meeting a little rocky"
By Luke Shanahan - The Garden Island
Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008

"Councilmember Tim Bynum said he hoped yesterday’s Kauai County Council organizational meeting would reflect the voters’ desire to see change, and that the members would respect one another’s aspirations for committee assignments.

Judging by statements made by several members of the council, and by the reactions of the people looking on from the gallery, Bynum’s hopes were not realized.

After a brief public comment from Kekaha resident Bruce Pleas in which he complained that the caucus meeting should be televised, rather than just being open to the public, the committee got down to the business at hand, determining who would chair the council for the next two years.

First, there was the small matter of appointing the temporary presiding officer of the meeting, or presiding officer pro-tem.

Kaipo Asing was elected to the pro-tem position by a four-to-three vote, with Derek Kawakami, Daryl Kaneshiro, Dickie Chang, and Asing voting in favor, and Jay Furfaro, Tim Bynum and Lani Kawahara voting against.

After that, Furfaro, seated at the head of the table, withdrew his nomination for chair, saying that it was evident that the votes for council chair would produce the same four-to-three vote.

Don't Expect Good Economic Analysis from Hawaii Economists

Hawaii firm wants to keep clean scrap plastic foam out of landfills

Posted on: Monday, November 17, 2008
Hawaii firm wants to keep clean scrap plastic foam out of landfills
Local company wants to keep clean scrap foam out of landfills

By Gordon Y.K. Pang
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAPOLEI — Wanted: foam waste big and small — from those huge chunks that insulate refrigerators to those smaller blocks that packed your iPod.

Pacific Allied Products, the state's only manufacturer of plastic foam-based roofing material, surfboard blanks, portable ice chests and even those ubiquitous packing "peanuts," recently began recycling its own scrap foam.

The program to recycle foam, also known by its scientific name of expanded polystyrene, or EPS, is proving so successful that Pacific Allied now wants to help other companies and even consumers get rid of their foam as well.

It's a proposal with significant implications in a state where there's a growing push to "go green" and recycle while the debate continues over how to divert waste from Hawai'i's overtaxed landfills.

"Bring your foam and we'll pick it up from here," said Bernie Coleman, president and general manager of the Campbell Industrial Park-based Pacific Allied.

Coleman estimated his company will use 1.8 million pounds of virgin foam material in the coming year.

About 4 percent, or 72,000 pounds, winds up as scrap and until a few months ago, that scrap was going into the city's waste stream.

"Big Island Beach Attracts Plastic Trash"
Pollution Spoiling South Hawaii Beach
By Howard Dashefsky

KAMILO BEACH, Big Island (KHNL) -- "A beach that was once a place where Native Hawaiians used to come to find logs for their voyaging canoes, is now a place where tons of trash wind up every year.

A once scenic beach on the Big Island is now a disturbing reminder of pollution spoiling the world's oceans.

It's one of the most picturesque place on Earth. And sadly, it's one of the most polluted. It's Kamilo Beach on the southern tip of the Big Island.

Because it's constantly exposed to the trade winds blowing directly on shore, it winds up being a gathering place for marine debris from all over the Pacific.

Specifically, it's become an accumulation zone for plastic trash.

"Here what were seeing is what all plastic trash turns into as t floats for hundreds of years in the ocean. Plastic fragments" said environmentalist Charles Moore.

What was once a beautiful white sand beach is what Moore and others now call ‘Plastic Beach'. And it is not only on the surface.

"This plastic goes down a foot deep. At one time these were toothbrushes, pens, cigarette lighters, plastic bottles, plastic caps, but now they're plastic fragments and pre-production plastic pellets, together forming a new kind of sand: plastic sand here on the beaches of Hawaii".

In all, tons and tons of debris, and none of it generated here.
