5TH ANNUAL HAWAII AQUATICS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED

Two-day Event Will Focus On Sustainable Ecosystems & Fisheries

HONOLULU: JANUARY 6, 2009 -- The Fifth Hawai`i Aquatics Conference will be held on Kauai at the Aloha Beach Hotel on January 10-11, 2009. Conference sponsors include the Hawaii Audubon Society, the Division of Aquatic Resources, DLNR, the Marine Conservation Biology Institute, and others. The program will begin at 9 am on Saturday and conclude at 5 pm on Sunday. Conference registration is $50 per day and includes all meals. Mon, Jan 19-Martin Luther King Day - Renewing America Together National Day of Service - Beach Clean Up at Maha'ulepu. Up. Help Sierra Club and Malama Maha'ulepu keep this beautiful stretch of beach looking beautiful. Meet at parking lot near Kawiloa Bay at 9am. Look for Sierra Club and Malama Maha'ulepu banners. We'll provide bags & gloves. Bring your lunch for picnic on the beach to watch humpback whales. If directions are needed, please call Judy Dalton prior to day of event at 246-9067. Ever since I went to Midway, I’ve never looked at a bottle cap or a disposable lighter in the same way. I used to think they were insignificant little things, which is close to not thinking at all. But walking around this gorgeous atoll 1,500 miles from Honolulu, I discovered that they are lethal weapons responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. When I see one on the beach now, I pick it up, put in my pocket and throw it in the trash.

Midway is home to the biggest albatross rookery in the world. More than 600,000 pairs of Laysan albatrosses descend each year on a pair of islands that make up a tad less than a square mile, packing some areas with a density of several thousand per acre. In fact, there are so many albatrosses present during the November-to-June mating season that the only plane that services the island, a vintage turbo-prop Gulfstream I, has to land at night to reduce the danger of hitting one.
