KKCR: Asian Settler Colonialism

Start: Dec 18 2008 - 4:00pm

End: Dec 18 2008 - 5:30pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-10

Join Katy this Thursday, December 18 as her guests Candace Fujikane and Dean Saranillio discuss their contributions to the newly released book Asian Settler Colonialism: From Local Governance to the Habits of Everyday Life in Hawai`i (Candace Fujikane and Jonathan Y. Okamura, eds., Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2008.)

This collection of essays by Asian settler and Kānaka Maoli academics, activists, artists and writers examines the relationship of Asian settler society to the ongoing occupation of Hawai`i.

The interdisciplinary collection challenges the assertion of Asian settler claims to Hawai`i, and critiques settler collusion with US colonialism.

This is very controversial, since the Asian settler history of resistance to white racism is an important foundation of claims to “local” identity.

While Hawai`i’s majority population of people of Asian ancestry celebrates its history of overcoming hardship and racism, a growing body of criticism interrogates the notion that Asian settlers have any more of a rightful claim to Hawai`i than do settlers from the continental US, and suggests a new relationship to the Native Hawai`ian struggle for self-determination and sovereignty.

Please join us from 4- 5:30 PM on KKCR. Listen live at 90.9, 91.9, 92.7, or kkcr.org. Phone lines will open for listener questions and comments from 5 to 5:30 PM (808-826-7771 or 1-866-275-1112.)

Opportunity to get involved with KKCR

Jimmy Trujillo is launching a new Public Affairs program on KKCR called "Mixed Plate Monday" and he needs a number of volunteers for various things (engineers, answer phones, hosts, producers, guests, etc.) to make this program a success. It will air on Mondays in the 5PM - 6PM timeslot and rotate between 4 topics:

1) Hawaiian Sovereignty
2) Environmental Awareness and Action
3) Youth of Today, and
4) Community Focus

Please let Jimmy know if you're interested in helping with the program, as a guest or a regular volunteer or contributer. Maybe you'd like to suggest topics or guests. Think about people you know who might have something fresh to bring to KKCR. Prior experience is not needed - this is by us, and for us - the community.

Jimmy Trujillo 346-7725 or email jtluvmwlava.net">jtluvmwlava.net

This is a great way to open up KKCR to a diversity of perspectives on important topics....I hope you'll seriously consider this opportunity to serve the community.

Katy Rose on KKCR

Start: Nov 6 2008 - 4:00pm

End: Nov 6 2008 - 5:30pm

Timezone: Etc/GMT-10

Aloha Friends and Allies

During today's program, we will be playing excerpts of a recorded interview I did with
Claude Marks, a curator of the Freedom Archives, about state supression of radical
social movements in the US. (http://freedomarchives.org/)

Also, today KKCR's fall membership drive starts up and I wanted to give you a
head's up about the amazing donations we will be giving away to people who call
in and donate DURING OUR PROGRAM ONLY today, Thursday, Nov. 6 between 4 and 5:30.

It goes against our nature to exhort people to pledge at various "levels"
in order to get these gifts. On our program, our custom is to give everyone an equal chance to get one of these premiums, no matter if you give $5 or $500.

Our sense is that we can all trust that we will make rational decisions based on
a combination of our financial situations and how valuable community radio programming and media justice is to us.

Donating during this program will be a vote of confidence for the kind of alternative
social-justice-directed public affairs programming we strive to bring you.

If you have a preference for any particular book or magazine, let the person who answers the phone know!

The generous folks at some of our favorite publishing collectives, journals and
organizations came through again with these terrific gifts:

From AK Press:

-Everywhere All the Time: A New Deschooling Reader, ed. by Ed Hern
-Free Comrades: Anarchism and Homosexuality in the United States, 1895-1917, by
Terrence Kissack
