Dreaming the Future Can Create the Future

Published on Monday, November 10, 2008 by The Huffington Post
Dreaming the Future Can Create the Future

by Kenny Ausubel
Dreaming the future can create the future. We stand at the threshold of a singular opportunity in the human experiment: To re-imagine how to live on Earth in ways that honor the web of life, each other and future generations. It's a revolution from the heart of nature - and the human heart.

Then again, in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, "The future ain't what it used to be."

We also stand at the brink of worldwide ecological and civilizational collapse. We face a reckoning from the treacherous breach in our relationship with nature. We've been acting like a rock star trashing a hotel room, and it's the morning after. But this hotel is planet Earth. The guest rules are non-negotiable. If we don't change our ways fast, management may vote us off the island.

We're entering an age of nature. It calls for a new social contract of interdependence. Taking care of nature means taking care of people, and taking care of people means taking care of nature.

The ecological debt we've incurred is dire. We've precipitated climate change that's within one degree centigrade of the maximum temperature in the past million years. As NASA's chief climatologist James Hansen warns, "Beyond that, we will likely see changes that make Earth a different planet." Think Jurassic Park. Hansen and many other leading scientists say we have ten years at best to make a massive global shift, an extreme carbon makeover. It's show-time.

Aloha Dear Friends,

As many of you know, the third annual, and much loved and enjoyed Aurora Foundation fundraiser is coming up very soon, on Saturday Nov.15th. We have an amazing venue for this year's event, which is named "Imagine". It will be held at the majestic 100+ acre River Ranch in Kilauea. Scroll down to see our promotional poster about "Imagine".

There will be an incredible array of talented Kauai chefs coming to prepare their creative specialties on site, as well as others who will be bringing dishes already prepared, and ready to enjoy. Our food theme is "Keep it local and make it sustainable", and the cuisine promises to be inspirational.

The Pacific Sound Machine and other special guests will be on hand to provide amazing music, for both your listening and dancing pleasure.

There will be an abundance of silent and live auction items to inspire your holiday gift giving.

Because of your generous support, we have, within the past two years and primarily at the Children of the Forest project, been able to build infrastructure and construct buildings, a medical center, libraries, as well purchase musical instruments, school supplies, mosquito nets, shoes, bicycles, educate children. We have, together, collected clothing and sewn hundreds of blankets for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Kaua`i Roundtable: Collaborating and Planning for a Sustainable Kaua`i

KAUA`I- It is time to ride the wave of “together we can” energy that was produced by both the national and local elections in an action and collaboration-oriented Eco-Roundtable, on Thursday, November 20th, from 6-8:30 at the Memorial Convention Hall.

This Kaua`i Roundtable will focus on government, business, and community partnership in an effort to move us towards a more sustainable Kaua`i. With economic, energy, and climate uncertainties facing our world, we must come together as a community to determine and work towards the best, most sustainable courses of action.

Hugh OʻReilly, the ex-mayor of Whistler, will start off the evening with a discussion of how diverse sectors of the community teamed to create one of the worldʻs best models for sustainability. He will touch upon some of Whistlerʻs main areas of success, including solid waste management, transportation, financial sustainability, conservation lands, watershed protection, energy efficiency, preserving indigenous culture, comprehensive sustainability planning, and, most importantly, how government and community worked together to achieve their vision.

Organizer in Chief

Published on Thursday, November 6, 2008 by TruthDig.com
Organizer in Chief

by Amy Goodman

You could almost hear the world’s collective sigh of relief. This year’s U.S. presidential election was a global event in every sense. Barack Hussein Obama, the son of a black Kenyan father and a white Kansan mother, who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, represents to so many a living bridge—between continents and cultures. Perhaps the job that qualified him most for the presidency was not senator or lawyer, but the one most vilified by his opponents: community organizer, on the South Side of Chicago. As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin mocked: “This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.”

But perhaps that’s just what it needs. Obama achieved his decisive electoral victory through mass community organizing, on the ground and online, and an unheard-of amount of money. It was an indisputably historic victory: the first African-American elected to the highest office in the United States. Yet community organizing is inherently at crosscurrents with the massive infusion of campaign cash, despite the number of small donations that the Obama campaign received.

Sen. Obama rejected public campaign financing (sealing that policy’s fate) and was flooded with cash, much of it from corporate donors. Those powerful, moneyed interests will want a return on their investment.

Real Change Depends on Stopping the Bailout Profiteers

Published on Thursday, November 6, 2008 by The Huffington Post
Real Change Depends on Stopping the Bailout Profiteers

by Naomi Klein

To understand the meaning of the U.S. election results, it is worth looking back to the moment when everything changed for the Obama campaign. It was, without question, the moment when the economic crisis hit Wall Street.

Up to that point, things weren't looking all that good for Barack Obama. The Democratic National Convention barely delivered a bump, while the appointment of Sarah Palin seemed to have shifted the momentum decisively over to John McCain.

Then, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac failed, followed by insurance giant AIG, then Lehman Brothers. It was in this moment of economic vertigo that Obama found a new language. With tremendous clarity, he turned his campaign into a referendum into the deregulation and trickle down policies that have dominated mainstream economic discourse since Ronald Reagan. He said his opponent represented more of the same while he stood for a new direction, one that would rebuild the economy from the ground up, rather than the top down. Obama stayed on this message for the rest of the campaign and, as we just saw, it worked.

Now That the Election Is Over, the Fight for Economic Justice Begins!

Now That the Election Is Over, the Fight for Economic Justice Begins!

by Medea Benjamin and Arun Gupta

While millions of Americans are celebrating the election of Barack Obama, the wealthy and corporate interests who dished out billions of dollars this election season will be swarming over Washington to get their agendas passed. The energy giants will demand "clean coal," nuclear power and offshore drilling.
