Howzit folks,
I want to do some sign holding in front of the State building facing Rice Street during lunch time (12 to 1) and again on the highway/sidewalk across Mcdonald's around 4 to 5pm in support of the righteous action taken to protect the iwi of Kanaka Maoli at Naue. It's not a major demo but something speedily planned to inform the public (mostly working folks) on the issue. If you can make it fine. I'll be making a few signs about respecting this site- I think many people can relate to this issue but get confused with the "property rights" bullshit of the developer. The site should be protected and preserved, no ifs and or buts- if Brescia loses money, well too bad. It's about time that the rights of the Kanaka come first! Please spread the word.
Take care,
Ray

Aloha friends and ohana,
Thursday June 17th, 5:00 pm, Moikeha Building, Rooms 2A & 2B. Next to the
DMV Office in Lihue. Please put it on your calendar, and plan to attend
this critical public meeting.
Kauai’s Governor’s Community Advisory Council will be holding a meeting at
that time, for the specific purpose of addressing HB 2872 which is
currently sitting on Governor Lingle’s desk, awaiting her signature.
This is the ‘Kokee bill’. Here’s the link to the actual text of this bill
so you can read it for yourself:
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2008/Bills/HB2872_CD2_.htm
But let me summarize (and explain) it briefly.
There are 3 critical aspects to House Bill 2872:
1) All current Kokee leaseholders will get an opportunity to obtain new
long-term leases at re-negotiated lease rents.
2) There will be an auction for all other available cabins and vacant
lots, giving preference to Kauai fulltime residents.
3) A Citizen’s Advisory Council will be formed, consisting of 9 members
from Kauai’s community and 4 non-voting ‘experts’. This Council will help
direct how issues pertaining to Kokee are addressed.
The unfortunate choices made by the DLNR in 1985 do not have to be
repeated. We do not need to lose more beloved Kokee cabins to an
ill-conceived auction. The current Kokee cabin community provides lodging
and ‘connection’ to a huge network of local families, and this needs to be
preserved.
The accumulated knowledge, relationships, commitment, passion and

-Joan Conrow, independent journalist.

Q & A with Hawaii's Experts before & after Film
The 11th Hour interviews a variety of world experts explore how humanity has arrived at the current convergence of environmental crises while exploring steps that people can take to avert global disaster. In summary, the earth is nearing meltdown, beyond climate change. Forests have undergone major destruction. The ocean is becoming stagnant. Almost everywhere, the soil itself is largely damaged. In addition, 50,000 species a year are becoming extinct; no ecosystem can be identified as improving.
Humans suffer from increasing numbers of diseases caused by pollution. At fault is the overproduction of non-sustainable manufactures, immense waste and destruction, and an unsupportable population. The primary cause for much of the crisis is the fuels we use, petroleum being the primary one. Within this century, if nothing effective is achieved, planetary damage will be dramatic and total in every area. Although impossible to predict, extreme disaster could be quick once the balance is decisively tipped in the wrong direction, and it will happen everywhere.

The good people organizing at Naue need this back up.
