Aha Moku Councils under Act 212 (2007)

Special guest, Kenneth Bray, a Hawaiian master woodcarver and cultural practitioner, and friends will discuss their views and concerns about Act 212 (HI 2007) to establish Aha Moku Councils. The Aha Moku Council is a native Hawaiian structure of natural resource management that can be incorporated into our current resource management processes. They will establish a comprehensive set of native Hawaiian best management practices and advise the State of Hawaii and the community on their implementation. Now in the formative stages, they are conducting outreach to cultural practitioners, seeking public input and will prepare a report with recommendations to the next Legislature.

The vision for these Councils is “To incorporate appropriate native Hawaiian knowledge and protocols for the preservation, cultivation and management of all native Hawaiian natural and cultural resources for future generations.” They are to be composed of “persons having traditional Hawaiian cultural and generational knowledge and expertise as farmers, fishermen and konohiki (caretakers of the land) for each ahupua`a.”
