With the cost of oil rising and the economy suffering, having accessible and convenient transportation options is an issue of economic and social justice. In addition, automobile emissions are one of the leading causes of CO2 pollution and global climate change. Please see the attached letter asking the county council for specific increases in the budget of the Kaua'i bus in order to increase services during peak commuter times, extended hours, increase in service to Hanalei, and Sunday services. The Kaua‘i Democratic Women’s Caucus will host Rep. Mina Morita, D-District 14, at a meeting Sunday.

Morita is scheduled to speak on a Constitutional Convention, a process that allows for revisions to the state’s founding document. The Constitution requires that voters be polled every 10 years on whether to call a ConCon. This November voters will be asked whether one should be convened.

The talk, which is open to the public, begins at 2 p.m. at 3920 Hunakai St. in Lihu‘e.

The kickoff meeting for the development of Hawaii's Statewide Bioenergy Master Plan will take place in Honolulu on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in the auditorium of the State Capitol, 415 South Beretania Street.

We hope you will be able to participate in this event, kicking off an intense and comprehensive effort to develop a statewide plan for the potential production and use of bioenergy to displace a portion of Hawaii's $5 billion per year (and rising) dependence on imported fuels.

Bioenergy offers both great opportunities and great challenges; the importance and complexity of the area require the development of an intelligent and realistic bioenergy master plan which incorporates the input of the many experts and visionaries dedicated to the well-being of our state, our economy, and our citizens.

-Iraqi political analyst Raed Jarrar will join us by phone to discuss conditions in Iraq under occupation, in a preview of his upcoming speaking engagement on Kaua’i.

-Mico Slattery, professor of Native Studies, Philosophy and US History at Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College in Michigan, will be in the studio to engage in a stimulating discussion about indigenous sovereignty, globalization, and the state of resistance in Native America.

A 3-day workshop on the ecology, restoration, and management of Hawaiian stream and riparian ecosystems is planned for 20-22 May, 2008 on Oahu. A subset of presenters from that workshop will be on hand on Kauai during 23 May to provide a broad overview of the presentations made on Oahu. The intent is to transfer information and technology from that workshop to interested parties, and to provide a broad array of ideas, tools, and techniques that may be useful to individuals or organizations interested in improving the management of streams and riparian systems on Kauai. The format will include informal powerpoint presentations along with open discussion and question/answer sessions.

Two new locations are now available for classes on the north shore in Kilauea and at Kalapaki in Lihu`e which will begin in June. Formal instruction in Hawaiian chant and dance – both hula kahiko and hula `auana, along with music, language and other creative art forms associated with hula are offered for all ages, 3 years to adult. The halau is actively recruiting male students (boys and men) into its new Keiki Kane (boys 8 - 12) and Kane Hula (men 13 & older) classes. The halau provides opportunity for cultural learning, performances, travel, competition and more. No prior experience is necessary.

Army Corps seeks Native Hawaiian perspective

A series of public meetings will be held to hear input from the public on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers public consultation project. The Kaua‘i gathering will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 30 at Kaua‘i Community College.

The Corps is interested in learning how to better consult with the public, Native Hawaiians and Native Hawaiian Organizations in its permit decision process.

The public meeting will have a presentation by the Corps, a presentation by a Native Hawaiian practitioner or advocate, and a facilitated discussion. The presentations will be used to highlight real-life examples of the consultation process.
