EcoRoundtable Waste Group Notes
- JoAnn had shared voting that would be taking place on November 20th by the county council for solid waste funds. We don’t have any other details on this, but clearly important for community to share their voice.
- There is a need for recycling bins at the shopping mall, parks and schools. These bins should be labeled and color coded system wide for easy recognition.
- Suggestions were made for a localized recycling pickup operation. Individuals can start on their street, spreading out through their neighborhood and into parks. The idea is to “clean and care” for your own area (each of us) and then spreading out our coverage from our inner circles.
- We also discussed how to get the word out for ideas such as the one above, as well as the awareness of available recycle and salvaging businesses. For instance, there is a business in Hanapepe that collects leftover construction materials and sells them at a discount, but not all residents are aware of their existence.
- The concept of neighborhood centers being utilized to launch recycling informational meetings (perhaps through ZWK) on a quarterly basis. Educating the public about how to recycle, what they can recycle and where to get it to.
- Zero Waste Kauai is also currently gathering information for legislation on the ban of Styrofoam for our county.
